2. Become a Commissioned Rep – In this scenario, my friend will put a form on your website (or he might even build you a website for free if you don’t already have one) that will copy both you and him and when he closes a sale, you’ll get a percentage of the profits from the sale. In this case, he collects the money and does the bookkeeping and pays you every month for helping him grow his business. It won’t take many customers to build a healthy residual income for you while you continue working your current clients. If at any time you want to give up your clients and collect a residual income on them, then you can take a vacation to Tahiti while my friend slaves away to make your customers happy.

So How Much Money Are We Talking About Here?

I don’t like being secretive, but in this case, I’ll have to defer to common sense. There is a reason I won’t disclose (actually, a few reasons) my friend’s prices (and your commission) right now in this blog post.

• First, I don’t have his price sheet yet. He’s promised it to me and it’s on the way, but until I see it, I don’t want to talk numbers and cents.
• Secondly, there is a lot of competition out there. If I just go blabbing all over the Internet what my friend’s awesome prices are, other online marketers will try to compete on the same terms. That won’t be good for anybody because my friend is a veteran Internet marketer (he’s been marketing online since 1995) and most new Internet marketers can’t keep up with him. They can’t provide the same level of service at the same low price. You’ll get better service from my friend.
• Thirdly, I’d like to put you in touch with him personally and you can discuss the details. Or, you and I can touch base and we’ll discuss the details. Whichever you feel more comfortable with, I think this sort of arrangement would work best for all involved if we got to know each other well and figured out how best we can work together. So What Do You Get Out Of This, Allen?

That’s a fair question. If you and my friend are in the relationship and I’m out of it, which I will be unless you order services through me, then what do I get out of it? There’s a simple answer. My friend has offered me a 5% commission on each commissioned I bring him. That’s it. Just 5%. (If you choose the reseller option, then I get nothing.)

In other words, if a client comes in with a $1,000 order, my friend will get his part, you’ll get your part, and I’ll get a measly $50. That’s not much, but I’d like to recommend 10 really good resellers. Hey, I want some residual income too!

I don’t want you to do that. It’s not that I don’t trust you, but the Internet is a vicious place. You don’t live and work online for sixteen years without making a few enemies. Believe me, I’m been marketing online since 2001, full time since 2006, and I’ve made a few myself.

But I’m not saying there is a lot of negative information about my friend online. There isn’t. Still, he’s got his detractors and I’d rather you get the right information from the right place.

So instead of telling you his name right now, I’d rather you contact me and I’ll put you in touch with him. You can ask us all the questions you want. There’s no commitment to enter into any relationship with me or my friend just by filling out my contact form. No commitment! None at all.

An example of what I mean is keyword-based domain names. Originally, if you wanted your site to rank well in a search engine then you had to have your keyword in your domain name. From about 1995 to 2003 this was true. Right around the time of the Florida Update, that changed.

What Was The Florida Update?

Whatever happened with the Florida Update, one thing is for certain: It changed SEO forever. It was not as easy to rank pages after that as it was before. The algorithmic changes that Google made during the Florida Update were not domain name specific – in fact, I believe there were a number of changes that took place at the same time – but the changes did have an effect, whether intended or not, that diminished the importance of keyword-based domain names. From 2003 until about 2007, if your domain name contained your primary keyword then it was an influence on rankings but it wasn’t to the same degree as before the update.

Since 2003, Google has continued to tweak its algorithms. I believe that is when Google got serious about its hall of mirrors. Since the Florida Update Google has played with its algorithms at least on a weekly basis, making small changes here and there. Where before, Google might have made big changes less often, now they make smaller changes more often.

This is significant. What it means is that no one will ever guess what the most important factors are at any given time. As soon as you think you know they will change. But it also means that we have some reasonable assurance that Google will not mess around with certain core principles even if they nudge a few certain factors plus or minus.

The Current State Of SEO And Domain Names

All of this means that in the current state of SEO, your domain name should have your primary keyword in it. I have seen undeveloped websites rank for keywords when there was no content to rank for and no inbound links to prop it up. That can only be accounted for if one thing is true – the keyword in the domain name triggered a positive where other pages on the Web did not.

Will this ever change? Probably. But whether it does or not you can bet that keyword-based domain names always contain some element of a positive affect on rankings for targeted keywords. It’s always been that way; it likely always will.

Keep your knowledge of SEO current. It’s the only way to stay alive and make money online.
