For the past couple of weeks I’ve written a few posts about a new Internet marketing launch called IMCrew.

Originally, IMCrew was supposed to launch on August 5. Then they extended their pre-launch phase to August 12. No problem, that happens. But it is now August 18 and there has been no new word from IMCrew. That doesn’t look good.

On the surface, the “get paid to read articles” idea seemed a little pie-in-the-sky. But since it didn’t cost anything to join IMCrew, I figured I’d try it out just to see what happens. I often try out new sites like this just to see if someone comes up with something new and different that pays off. In IMCrew’s case, it seems that the idea has petered out.

But that doesn’t mean the rest of us couldn’t learn from IMCrew’s mistake. Here are some lesson notes to use on your next website launch:

• Make sure you cover all your bases in your planning phase. If you cover all contingencies then you are less likely to need to reschedule your launch.
• If you do need to extend your pre-launch phase, make sure you communicate with your affiliates by e-mail as well as by back-end interface. Not everyone will sign in to their account every day. IMCrew could still have affiliates who aren’t aware that they haven’t launched because they’ve never signed into their accounts after the initial sign up. Besides, by communicating on a daily basis, you can encourage afiliates to continue promoting you and signing into their accounts every day.
• Don’t leave people hanging. It is now August 18 and they were supposed to launch on August 12, yet I’ve heard nothing from them since August 5 when they extended their pre-launch phase.
• Never, never, never leave an old date on your public face. This smacks of a lack of professionalism like nothing else. I still have links from old posts pointing to this website. IMCrew will likely not get any more signups because their website still says launch date is August 12, which is past due. Who’s going to trust them now?
• Include a Contact Us page on your launch site. I went up to send a query to IMCrew to see if we might expect some information soon, another extension of the pre-launch phase – or anything – and there is no way to communicate with them. They don’t have a Contact Us page. Make it easy for your affiliates to contact you.

At this point I’d say that IMCrew is dead. It’s possibly a scam. It could have been a come on to get people’s e-mail addresses so that the owners could send them spam for another offer. I wouldn’t rule that out of the possibilities. On the other hand, for lack of evidence I can’t say for sure. I do know this: It doesn’t look good for IMCrew.

Many new Internet marketers make the mistake of thinking that if they join an affiliate marketing program that has a reputation for lucrative payouts then they will achieve success. Affiliate marketing is hard work and success doesn’t come naturally. If you are not willing to put in the hard work then you should not expect large payouts.

Another mistake many new affiliates make is in their choice of affiliate programs. They either choose a product they haven’t tried themselves or choose one based on the income potential with no thought as to its relevance to their interests or what else they are doing online.

The Most Important Considerations In Choosing An Affiliate Marketing Program You Will Enjoy

Before you join any affiliate program you should consider two things. All other considerations are secondary in nature.

1. First, pick a product or service that is related to an area of interest that you have. If you like to travel then pick travel-related affiliate marketing programs. Don’t pick a program just because other affiliates have earned a lot of money. Really study the programs you are interested in and see which ones you feel comfortable promoting.
2. Secondly, choose a product or service relevant to what you are doing online. If you manage a website related to digital cameras then join affiliate marketing programs that promote digital cameras and related products, not ski equipment. If you set up your online business in the first place to address the first point above then you’ll kill two birds with one stone. Always do something that you have an interest in – you’ll do it better.

Where Do You Find Affiliate Programs To Join?

Most people go right to an affiliate management company like Commission Junction or Clickbank. There’s nothing wrong with these websites and what they do, but I wouldn’t start there.

Before joining a program like Clickbank or CJ, perform a search at Google and Bing for an affiliate product related to your interests. If you have a website about classic literature then search for “classic literature affiliate program”. This should bring up search results for affiliate programs within your area of interest.

Don’t just visit the websites and join the programs. Read the affiliate policies. What are their pay out policies? Do they pay on a tiered system or do you just get paid based on what you do?

What is your commission? Try to choose programs that pay bigger commissions. If you only make $1 per sale then you’ll have to sell a lot of products and services to make any money, but if you make $100 per sale then you don’t have to sell that many units before you start to earn a decent income. Ten products and you’re making $1,000 per month.

Terms and policies are very important. Make sure you understand them.

Another way to find good affiliate programs to join – and this one takes a bit longer – is to start a blog. If you start a blog and write to it every day, you’ll start getting comments from people interested in what you are writing about. Some of them will link back to their own website. Visit the website of everyone who comments on your blog. You’ll find really decent affiliate programs that way. Wouldn’t you rather get a commission from someone visiting a site because you linked to it in a blog post than to lose a sale because they visited the site from a commenter?

Affiliate Marketing Is Fun And Practical

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online. If you choose the right program based on your interests and what you are currently doing online and promote it heavily then you can make decent money. But it is hard work. Be prepared.
